Frequently Asked Questions
If we choose the Virtual Learning Only (VLO) option for our instruction this coming year, will my child be able to participate in extracurricular activities?
Yes, all students enrolled at Nicholas Co. Schools, whether it be for in-class instruction or Virtual Learning Only (VLO), will be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities if they meet normal academic guidelines.
If we choose to enroll in the Virtual Learning Only (VLO), but change our minds after school starts, can we move to regular in-person instruction?
Once a student is enrolled in a particular instruction option, that student will remain in the enrolled option until the end of that 9 weeks. For example, if you enroll in the Virtual Learning Only (VLO) option at the beginning of school, the student will remain enrolled in the Virtual Learning Only (VLO) until the end of the 9 weeks. At that end of the 9 weeks, you can choose to change and enroll for in-person instruction or remain in the Virtual Learning Only (VLO).
How and when do I register for Virtual Learning Only Program of instruction for my child?
Click link on NCS website. Complete and submit application. Deadline is July 22.
How do I find out more about the Virtual Learning Only Program?
Check out the Virtual Learning Only announcement on the district website.
Is there a charge for the Virtual Learning Only Program?
No. All Nicholas County students who meet the admissions criteria as described on the Face Book Virtual Learning Only announcement and are admitted to the program will be assigned a district owned Chromebook to use for their enrollment in VLO. All Nicholas County students will pay a $30 student fee this year for traditional, distance and virtual instruction and supplies. This will be the only student fee charged for the year.
When do VLO classes start?
The same day as traditional in-class instruction on August 24.
Will VLO students be able to receive meals during the school year?
Yes. VLO students can pick up a week's worth of meals (breakfast and lunch) on Fridays between 11 am and 1 pm via the drive through meal distribution at NCES.
If my student attends only the Virtual Learning Only (VLO), will they still be able to have breakfast and lunch?
All students enrolled in Nicholas County Schools will have access to free breakfast and lunch. The details of meal distribution will be given at a later time.
How will my child eat their meals if they are required to be 6 feet apart?
Breakfast at both buildings will be provided as the students enter the building for their "health check". Lunch will be provided either in the students classroom or in an area determined acceptable to maintain social distance.
When and where will temperature checks be performed?
Temperature checks will be conducted by no touch thermometers either when a child enters a school from the bus or in the student drop off loop while in vehicles. All students and staff will be required to have their temperature checked daily.
